BCC Backpack Collection Drive and Conference
#BringBackOurGirls: Targeting Women Conference at BCC on March 25
On April 15th, more than 270 girls were kidnapped in Nigeria from the dorms of their high school by an Islamist group known as Boko Haram. Additional kidnappings followed. After seven months, most of the girls have not returned home and Human Rights Watch reports abuse ranging from rape and sexual violence to forced labor, forced marriages, and conversions.
To raise awareness of the missing girls, the Center for Peace, Justice and Reconciliation, Phi Theta Kappa, Women’s History Month, the Student Government Association, and the Office of Student Life are sponsoring #BringBackOurGirls: Targeting Women. This project consists of both an installation of backpacks and a conference that will take place as part of Women’s History Month on March 25th, 2015.
To make #BringBackOurGirls successful, we invite all faculty and staff at Bergen Community College to donate new or gently used backpacks for the installation project. Our goal is to collect 273 backpacks to symbolize each missing girl and the fact that women were targeted for pursuing their education. After the conference, the backpacks will be donated to a school in Nigeria.
